Carolyn Nelle Rhodes Chaney, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went home to rest Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at the age of 91. The daughter of Dr. John Carlisle and Cora Boyd Rhodes, Carolyn was born on April 5, 1929 in Puxico, Missouri. She celebrated her fifth birthday with her future husband, David Glenn Chaney, and after a high school romance and brief separation during David’s service in the United States Army, the two married on August 5, 1951. Carolyn began her higher education at Central Methodist University and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1951. She taught English, music, and E.S.L. for many years, primarily in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. Carolyn was an active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Florissant, Missouri, and a proud member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter J.T. She enjoyed a spirited game of Scrabble, watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and teaching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Dr. Jerry Rhodes of Farmington, Missouri. Her life and memory were cherished by her husband of nearly 70 years, David (Corky) until his passing on October 12, 2021. Carolyn’s faithful spirit will continue through her family: David R. and Debra Chaney, Rev. Dr. Sara Chaney, Carla (Chaney) and Glen Morelli, Rev. Judy (Chaney) and Martin Slimmer, Krista (Morelli) and Scott Heist, Ann (Chaney) and James Connell, Kara (Morelli) and Bradley Hawking, David L. and Elizabeth Chaney, Kimberly (Morelli) and Cory Davitt, Easton Hawking, Wyatt Heist, Addison Hawking, Madeline Davitt, Madison Chaney, David G. Chaney, and Zoey Belle Davitt. A memorial service for Carolyn and David Chaney will be held at St. Mark’s UMC on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at 10 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Graveside committal service will follow at Puxico Cemetery at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Mark’s UMC at 315 Graham Rd., Florissant, MO 63031.
