David Glenn Chaney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the age of 93. The son of Samuel and Flora (Hawks) Chaney, David (Corky) was born on August 27, 1928, in Puxico, Missouri. David enlisted in the United States Army in 1946, serving in pre-war Korea. He returned home on July 4, 1948, and married the love of his life, Carolyn Nelle Rhodes, on August 5, 1951. David graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1951. He taught history and coached volleyball at Farmington High School. He then became a textbook salesman, traveling throughout Missouri and Illinois for over 30 years. He retired from the IRS at age 70, after 10 years of government service. David was an active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Florissant for 61 years, serving as a head usher and holding several leadership roles. He was a Master Mason at Florissant/Overland Occidental Lodge #623, a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan, longtime Missouri Botanical Gardens member, an avid reader, and especially proud of his trees he grew from acorns to mighty oaks. David was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and siblings: Samuel, Flora (Bay) Mansbridge, E.B. (Breck), Rose Marie Gillette, Helen, and Louis. His life and laughter will be remembered by his family: David R. and Debra Chaney, Rev. Dr. Sara Chaney, Carla (Chaney) and Glen Morelli, Rev. Judy (Chaney) and Martin Slimmer, Krista (Morelli) and Scott Heist, Ann (Chaney) and Jimmy Connell, Kara (Morelli) and Bradley Hawking, David L. and Elizabeth Chaney, Kimberly (Morelli) and Cory Davitt, Easton Hawking, Wyatt Heist, Addison Hawking, Madeline Davitt, Madison Chaney, David G. Chaney, and Zoey Belle Davitt. A memorial service for David and Carolyn Rhodes Chaney will be held at St. Mark’s UMC on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at 10 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Graveside committal service will follow at Puxico Cemetery at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Mark’s UMC at 315 Graham Rd., Florissant, MO 63031.
